Statement by Maria Cazzato: "Through my portraits, I like to use imagery from fashion history to explore how standards of femininity and beauty have evolved over time. "Fuss and Frills" specifically features imagery from the 1920s. I think fashion designs from this period are particularly relevant today because of how women used clothing to declare their independence. I am fascinated by how and femininity was used as a source of power instead of subversion. The piece also contains imagery from the art nouveau movement of the early twentieth century. This not only makes the painting more reminiscent of the time period which inspired it, but also empowers femininity through the utilization of a distinctly feminine art movement."

Maria Cazzato is a sixteen-year-old from Tuscon, Arizona.
